Adjudication 2009  - Scottish Rite Cathedral

March 23, 2009
(Time is to be determined)

Adjudication 2007
The New Castle Regional Ballet underwent adjudication on February 18, 2007, at the Scottish Rite Cathedral in New Castle, Pennsylvania. NCRB’s Regional Company consisting of Angelica Audia, Rebecca Campbell, Kayla Clark, Caitlyn Doran, Jamie Grego, Jordan Hall, Elissa Houk, Katie Stoner, Nicole Vanasco, and Callie Wallace presented a demo class and three professionally choreographed pieces for the adjudicator.

Jonelle Paris, a former NCRB regional dancer herself, and now an instructor, created a work entitled Shadow of Hope, set to the traditional hymn Amazing Grace, as adapted by John Newton. A second work by Andrew Blight was entitled Slide; it was set to Dark Was the Night; God Moves on the Water by Blind Willie Johnson. A third piece by Kimberly Chapman of Vineland Regional Dance Company was entitled African Playground and was set to the traditional African music of Seleshe Damassae, Angelique Kidjo and The Mahotella Queens.

The adjudicator informed Debbie Parou, Artistic Director of NCRB, that Ms. Paris’s piece entitled Shadow of Hope, performed by Clark, Doran, Grego, Hall, Houk, Stoner and Vanasco, was selected for the Festival performance. This year’s Festival in Pittsburgh was the second National Festival. The first was held five years ago in Austin, Texas. Over 200 regional dance companies converged on Pittsburgh for instruction and performance on April 24-28, 2007. This provided a rare opportunity for Ms. Paris to showcase her work and exhibit the talented dancers of NCRB to a national audience. NCRB served as a “ghost host” of this prestigious event.

NCRB’s adjudicator was Leslie Crockett, whose biography is printed below.

The public will be able to see all the regional pieces, including Ms. Paris’s selection for the National Festival, in performance as part of New Castle Regional Ballet’s Spring Performance in the Scottish Rite Cathedral on Friday, May 25, 2007, at 7 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door.

Leslie Crockett - Northeast
Adjudicator
Leslie Crockett received her formative training from her parents, Barbara and Deane Crockett, early members of the San Francisco Ballet. They were also the founders of Sacramento Ballet, and were members of the core group that founded the Pacific Region of Regional Dance America. Other influential teachers were Robert Barnett, Alan Howard, and Chrestensens – William, Harold, Ruby, and Lew.
Ms. Crockett’s performing years were spent as a principal dancer with both the Sacramento and Pacific Ballet companies, and in two different time periods, as a corps member and then a soloist with the San Francisco Ballet. She also enjoyed several years with the National Touring Companies of “Hello Dolly” and “Mame.”

Ms. Crockett has taught extensively throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and as a guest teacher throughout the United States. She spent thirteen years as a faculty member of the San Francisco Ballet School and is currently on the faculty of the Marin Ballet School, where she has been for the past eleven years. Leslie was also very honored to be invited to teach at two RDA festivals.

Andrew Blight
Choreographer
Andrew Blight began studying ballet in his hometown Los Angeles at Le Studio, the school of the Pasadena Dance Theatre. He also received full scholarships to study with the Pacific Northwest Ballet School, San Francisco Ballet School, and the Houston Ballet Academy. His professional career began at the Louisville Ballet, where he was noted for his portrayal of Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet and the pas de deux Little Improvisations by Antony Tudor. In 1996, he was invited by Patricia Wilde to join Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre where he danced for three seasons.

As a choreographer, Andrew has had his work commissioned by such companies as Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Pittsburgh Opera, The Louisville Ballet, Playhouse Dance Company, DanceCorps, and Pittsburgh Youth Ballet, as well as creating numerous works for The Move, a company he founded and directs. Andrew maintains a full teaching schedule and has taught ballet for children at Pittsburgh Action Against Rape, the Pittsburgh Women’s and Children’s Shelter, and the Urban League of Pittsburgh Charter School. He was selected to participate in Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet’s annual Choreoplan project and was commissioned to create a new work for the International Association for the Study of Dreams annual conference.
